My Thoughts on Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

Title: Outlander (20th Anniversary Edition): A Novel

I just finished “Outlander” by Diana Gabaldon- the first book in the Outlander series. It was a really great book and different from what I normally would read. I’m definitely hooked and can’t wait to read the next one “Dragonfly in Amber”.

Here’s a quick synopsis of the book…

In 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon- when she innocently touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach- an “outlander”- in a Scotland torn by war of our Lord…1743.

Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire’s destiny is soon inextricably intertwined with Clan Mackenzie and the forbidding Castle Leoch. She is catapulted without warning into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life…and shatter her heart. For here, James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her passion so fierce and a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire…and between two vastly different men in two irreconciliable lives.

The characters of Jamie and Claire, the two main characters, were really well developed and I felt connected to them by the end of the book. Diana Gabaldon gives very vivid description of all aspects of the book so that I could picture it in my mind. There are some pretty steamy sex scenes in there too! Overall, it’s an excellent book and I highly recommend it.
