A few months ago, while going through the massive amount of pictures I have of our family, I said to my husband that the one thing I really wanted this year was to have professional photographs taken of the boys. Most of the photos we have are pictures I’ve taken with my camera/phone and a few from the department-store-big-mall –photography-chain type places. While they’re okay, I know that there’s a difference when it comes to having photos taken by a professional. With my kids changing by the second, I thought it would be great to capture them at this stage, which is why I was so grateful when the opportunity arose to review the services of New York photographer Jane Goodrich.
Jane Goodrich is a family photographer based in Westchester, New York. She shoots on location and in home as well as in her light-filled studio. Being a twin herself, her favorite subjects are multiples and siblings. I love the description on her website about how she loves letting each child’s personality shine through while capturing the uniqueness of their relationships – I thought that was the perfect sentiment for what I wanted to showcase with my two boys. We received what is called the “One Location Package” for review. Valued at $950 this package includes 2 to 3 hour in-home, studio or location session, children’s (and family) portraits, $150 worth of professional prints, cosmetic retouching, editing, post production, online gallery and a fully edited high-resolution disk (with a minimum of 30 images in at least 3 tones).
Before I even met Jane, I was impressed by what I knew of her. I checked out her online website gallery and her other social media pages and loved everything I saw. The images I saw were so crisp and clear and inviting. I really felt like I personally knew the families she photographed – her pictures really did say a thousand words. I was excited to see how she would capture my maniacs! We exchanged a few emails about time, location and what to wear and we booked a Monday morning at her studio through her online client portal. I really wanted to get a feel for her style at her place. My husband and I, and our boys, all wore bright colors on her advice. When we arrived at the studio I was pleasantly surprised at all the natural light that flooded in to the space. Jane was energetic and friendly and instantly put us all at ease. My two boys instantly took a liking to her. After a few minutes of chatting, Jane started shooting. It felt natural and easy. My boys listened to her and were attentive (VERY surprising for my four and two year old that both have such short attention spans!!). They posed and smiled and were just genuinely happy in the environment. Jane got them to take on different poses and props and incorporated my husband and I into the shoot as time went on. We all had such a good time. Even when my youngest started to melt down, Jane was calm and smiling and did what she does best – gets the picture! The session seemed to fly by.
When our pictures from the session were ready for viewing Jane sent me a note to explain the process of viewing and choosing pictures. My husband and I logged on to the photo hosting site and we couldn’t believe our eyes. Every photo is fantastic – every single one. Jane asked us to pick a few favorites, and that was the hardest part of this review because we truly love them all! Jane really captured the spirit of our boys in these pictures – from the playfulness of our oldest, to the quiet reserve of our little guy, to the crazy mix of all four of us together. And Jane right about wearing bright colors – I think they make a big difference with our skin tone and our light eyes and really flatter all of us. Now that our disc of images has arrived I have so many plans for printing and hanging!
