My three little ones and I have been fans of children’s author, Steve Light since we were introduced to his beautiful collection of Storyboxes. We were very excited to read his children’s picture book, Zephyr Takes Flight which features a spunky little girl named Zephyr who dreams of airplanes and flying. Inspired by the author’s own love of flying this delightful book encourages children to dream big and use their imaginations to go on amazing adventures.
I really love the vivid illustrations and actually laughed out loud knowingly at the perfectly captured depiction of the “very busy mother” in one scene. The text in this story is engaging for young and old and my children and I couldn’t wait to see what happens next throughout the adventure. My seven year old son thought it was “smart” how Zephyr drew upon all the resources in her room i.e. “papers and pens, drawing and maps, books about how to fly and where to go” in order to go on the ultimate (imaginary) journey around the world on the “FS Bessie”. There is a fun, interesting supporting character “Rumbus” the little pig who adds a whimsical touch to the story that my five year old son loves. Will Zephyr finish her tour around the world in time to return home for breakfast?
Zephyr Takes Flight is a great story for young child and it is one of those children’s books equally appealing to grownups too who may be reading it aloud. It is available for purchase in hardcover for the SRP of $16.99 online and at major book retailers.
In my opinion, Steve Light is a very talented author and illustrator of children’s books and he is one of my children’s favorites. They are always excited to read his latest titles and we are never disappointed with his engaging, creative storylines. Zephyr Takes Flight is no exception and is prominently displayed in their “favorites” section of their bookcase.
