We live in a fairly rural area where having a car is a “must” in my books. I actually learned the other day that there’s no taxi cab company in our town either! John and I only have one vehicle now and I’m always paranoid that something will happen to it. I need my car not only for grocery shopping and picking up the mail at the Post Office, but also to take care of my kids.
As parents, I’m sure you can relate to being the “mom taxi” and shuttling your kids back and forth to friend’s houses, lessons and extra-curricular activities. Bridget goes figure skating a few times each week and Olivia is enrolled in guitar lessons. Also, their dad lives about a 15 minute drive from here so I feel like I’m always running the roads. I would be lost without a reliable vehicle and it would make life very difficult for me to not have one.
I remember when I was in high school and my mom was always driving my sisters and I everywhere. I used to work at a grocery store across town and she would take me there and pick me up after my shift. We had an older station wagon that was falling apart. It would overheat if you were sitting in traffic too long and smoke would actually come out of the hood. This story is funny now to think about it, but back then it brought my mom to tears. My mom was driving me to work and we were stuck in construction traffic downtown on a hot day. Smoke started bellowing out of the hood and the car majorly overheated! My mom was so embarrassed and we had to ditch the car on the side of the road and walk to a pay phone to call my dad. I was terrible! I was so happy when we were finally able to get a new vehicle…one that actually worked!

Well there’s the way things are supposed to work and the way they tend to work. On a great day my daughter leaves with her hair and teeth brushed, clean clothes and a healthy lunch in time to catch the bus. Realistically she’s always running a minute behind and has to be reminded to do EVERYTHING. She’s just not a morning girl.
Yes, any parent definitely needs reliable vehicle. I too am constantly driving SOMEWHERE and don’t know what i would do without my vehicle. You kind of take it for granted now because what did everyone used to do? They made it work in the old days without and I just imagine it!
When I lived in NYC there was no need for a car. It was faster & easier to shuttle my kids on trains and/or busses. Now that I live in a semi-rural area, I can relate. We only have one car to share also. It is definitely a struggle to keep it up and running till we have the means to buy another car. Good luck.
