Guidecraft Steve Light Storybox Review

As a member of the Guidecraft® Educators Blog Team, I have had the pleasure of incorporating the highest quality wood toys and furniture into our school room. This month, I am so excited to introduce you to one of our all-time favorites………Hansel & Gretel-A Steve Light Storybox™.

The Hansel & Gretel Storybox™ (SRP $50) brings the classic fairy tale to life as children are able to narrate the story and role play using hand-painted resin characters and props. I expected this story-box to be a hit but I didn’t expect it to capture the children’s attention and hold it as well as it did, far exceeding my expectations. In fact, after one play session that was over an hour, the children had cleaned up and when I went to put it away I noticed that they had started playing again. When I asked about it they responded, “We decided to keep the adventure going because Hansel & Gretel need to get back home so their dad can stop worrying about them.”

The Storybox™ was created by Steve Light who is an acclaimed, award-winning teacher, author and illustration. I am very impressed with the attention to detail put into each story-box. It includes character depictions of Hansel, Gretel, the Father, the Crunch Witch and the Duck. The children loved using the props such as the cauldron, the candy house, the cottage, a lovely blue cloth for the river, bread crumbs etc.

I appreciate that the Storybox™ is a great way to encourage pre-reading skills, reading and development of vocabulary and creative expression. The older child can practice their reading skills with the story (included with the set) being read aloud to the younger children who use their imaginations to bring the story to life.

Storage is easy as everything nestles nicely in the wooden story-box. The over-all quality of this set is excellent and it is designed to be durable to withstand hours and hours of play. I love sitting back and observing the children developing storytelling skills that I hope will last for a lifetime!
