This Montreal based publisher has added two wonderful new titles including Chicken Joe Forgets Something Important and Songs From the Baobob: African Lullabies and Nursery Rhymes.
My children adore the quirky and fun title, Chicken Joe Forgets Something Important ($16.95) with the songs and story by Trout Fishing In America. My kids (who have four pet hens) were very surprised to realize that Chicken Joe is actually a cat who spends time in the henhouse. This story which includes a delightful mix of rock and roll (played by roosters) focuses on Chicken Joe and his friends on his “special day”. I really like the vivid illustrations by Stephanie Jorisch which helps to bring the story “to life.” The songs featured on the accompanying full length CD are lots of fun and my little ones were dancing for over 20 minutes. I like that this book can be read and/or the child can listen to the narration on the CD. This book and CD is a real winner…..Happy Birthday Chicken Joe!
Songs From the Baobab: African Lullabies & Nursery Rhymes ($16.95) are songs collected by Chantal Grosleziat. In my opinion, the beautiful illustrations by Elodie Nouhen are works of art and have captivated my little ones. When we are ready to settle down for the evening, my children enjoy listening to the CD that is included with this book. Most impressively, it is the rare lullaby CD that is also appealing to adults too with wonderful “indigenous instruments” featured in 29 songs from 10 countries in Africa. The lyrics and poetry is very soothing to my children especially after a busy day and snuggling up and reading this book together and then listening to their favorite songs is a great way to connect with one another.
Stories and music from The Secret Mountain would make wonderful gift ideas for the holidays. These are interesting, unique stories and songs that my children want to listen to again and again.
