My style of meal planning has basically been to decide what we are eating for breakfast, lunch and dinner that morning. I will be the first to admit that my way has not been the most efficient method so I have wanted to learn more about menu planning.
I recently had the opportunity to use The Organized Family Menu Planner by Glow Baby. This user friendly menu planner is easy to use and I immediately liked the quality of the paper and the fact that it has a generous area for writing. In the beginning of the book there is a handy conversion chart that I have referenced frequently, a section for family member food preferences and favorite family recipes. I recently added my father-in-laws recipe for rice pudding which has been in my husband’s family for over 100 years.
There are 52 menu planning worksheets for meals where for each week I can input my selections for breakfast, snack (3 different spots), lunch and dinner. My favorite part is that each week has a blank grocery shopping list that can be detached when I need to go to the market.
The Organized Family Menu Planner even has a “Special Occasions” section which I have found very helpful in planning my Thanksgiving dinner. I usually make mental notes of what I will need but since using this menu planner, I feel much more organized and efficient. This section also has a blank detachable shopping list included as well as a guest list and a “to do” list.
In the back of the book, additional features include another section of recipes and a pocket that can hold miscellaneous items such as cut out recipes from a magazine.
Overall, I find that The Organized Family Menu Planner is very comprehensive. I will originally admit that I mistakenly assumed this would just be another thing to take up more of my time. Thankfully, I was wrong because this menu planner has been very helpful and has actually saved me time and unnecessary frustration in terms of grocery shopping and cooking routine. I tend to buy food when it is on sale and freeze it in our deep freezer. I would never remember what I had available in the freezer so I would end up “finding” food once it was already freezer burned. Now, when I go grocery shopping, I plan our upcoming meals as I am putting the food away so it is less wasteful too and is actually saving us even more money on our food costs.
The Organized Family Menu Planner is a great idea for any family and would make an excellent gift idea for the holidays, hostess gift, bridal shower or house warming gift.
