This year for Christmas I’m doing something I’ve never done before. I’m doing all my Christmas shopping without ever leaving the comfort of my home. Yep, online shopping only!
In past years, I’ve done most of my shopping at the malls or big box stores. However, last year was horrendous with the terrible road conditions and crowds (which I cannot stand), I said to heck with it. I’m NOT doing this again. I’m going to be a savvy online shopper this year!
Visa Canada recently conducted a survey on holiday shopping trends in Canada and the results are quite interesting! Here’s some of the key findings:
- On average, Canadians plan on spending 8.1 hours shopping in the mall and 3.9 hours shopping online this holiday season. Maritimers plan to spend the most time in the mall (9.2 hours), while Quebecers anticipate spending the least (7.5 hours). Ontarians plan to spend the most time online shopping (4.4 hours), while those from Saskatchewan/Manitoba rate the lowest (3.1 hours).
- Crowds (35%), long lineups (22%) and parking lot chaos (11%) continue to be the elements Canadians like least about holiday shopping.
- Canadian males expect to spend 7.2 hours shopping at the mall this holiday season, while females expect to spend 8.9 hours. Female Canadians expect to spend 3.5 hours shopping online during the holiday season, while males expect to spend 4.3 hours.
And how likely are people to shop online this year? Check out these stats:
- 51% of Canadians said that they are more likely than last year to shop online this holiday season.
- 68% of Canadians between 18-34 years claim to be more likely than last year to shop online this holiday season.
One site that I’ll visiting this year to shop is Visaperks.ca. They have lots of selection and great deals. I just found a deal for 10% off your purchase of DVDs and Blu-rays from Cineplex when I pay with my Visa card. John’s a movie buff and collects DVDs.
Will you be joining me in my online shopping adventure this year? Or are you sticking to the stores?

Always online – there are no bookshops near me – my favorite gifts
I enjoy shopping in store but I also shop online when I find better deals online.
I still go to the stores
I shop mostly online but I do some shopping in the stores.
I will be doing almost all of my holiday shopping online – I’m much more comfortable shopping from home than trekking through the malls and stores
I plan to do both online shopping and shop the bargains in stores.
I prefer shopping online. I hate crowds!
Thanks for the opportunity!
I definitely plan on doing my shopping online. No crowds, no waiting, easy browsing. Also, most sites do free shipping around Christmas time. It is a win-win!
I always do the bulk of my shopping online, so this year will be no different!!!
Planning to do a bit of both! Only going to the stores when they probably won’t be as busy! We’ll see how it goes!
I am doing all my shopping online! I value my sanity..*smile
I will be shipping in stores. I love to see and touch the things I am buying.
I think i will do mostly stores. But online shopping does sound appealing.
I do a lot of my shopping through Amazon thanks to Swagbucks. Any extras are through stores…..
I plan to shop in stores for most of the gifts I will buy. I like to see how they actually look and feel before I purchase them, but I know I’ll make my Dad a new coffee mug online with pictures of the family because he loves them.
I do as much as possible online but always end up in stores too — either for the odd thing or to browse for someone who is hard to buy for.
Online!
both instores and online depending on the deals and item
I plan on shopping both online and in stores. As much as I find online shopping convenient it sort of takes away some of the “thought” or personal touch that goes along with gift giving. Depending on who the gift is for or what it is will determine whether I buy it online or not.
I usually shop at both. I buy presents throughout the year though so Christmas isn’t so stressful. I find it a bit eaiser on the finances that way too!
online is so much easier – no crowds, no coat to wear!
I like to shop in stores
I have already done some in store shopping and online shopping, I continue to do the rest in store as the sight I shop at does not have the things I am looking for, if they did I would shop online, nothing like shopping in your cozy comfys lol
I do both online and in store shopping. This year I did more in store shopping.
This year we will be making a date of it (DH and I). DD3 will be left with my parents and we will plan out our route that day along with a nice dinner or lunch after (depending on how soon we start and finish).
I always feel planning ahead of time helps a lot.
There are some purchases I will make online as I find there are some great deals with online purchases.
I do a lot of my research on line but buy at the brick and mortar stores.
With 3 little boys, I will be definitely doing most of my shopping online! (Then I have to be creative where I hide everything!)
