My Review:

When I took on the critical challenge of home educating my three young children I was terrified that I wouldn’t be able to teach my children how to read. A year later, as my six year old son is reading Level 1 & 11 readers with confidence I couldn’t be more proud. I was excited to read What Children Need to Learn to Read by Michelle Vallene. This book is an excellent resource for all parents or early educators who want to help their children develop strong reading skills, confidence and a love of books. There are lots of fun activities that children are going to enjoy yet don’t take up a lot of time or require additional expensive resources. In fact many of the activities involve only quality time with you and your baby or child which is priceless in my opinion. My 3, 4 and 6 year old children loved the Rhyme Time activity where they cut out pictures from a magazine and placed various pictures such as a dog on it and then thought up words that rhymed like frog, log etc. We then stapled their pages together to create their very own book and they were beaming with pride. In addition to the activities and information presented by the author there is an excellent appendix section that I have been referencing to get additional book and magazine ideas, reading based computer programs and websites etc. The author has successfully written a literacy book that is not going to be overwhelming to parents and can actually motivate, inspire and give you the confidence that you CAN help teach your child to read!

You are invited to visit the Learners Lane to purchase your copy of What Children Need to Learn to Read by Michelle Vallene.

I also highly recommend the accompanying audio CD, Songs & Nursery Rhymes which has fun rhymes and songs to support the reading process and includes all of the songs and rhymes from the book. We had a blast singing, dancing and groovin’ to the songs and rhymes along with the author and her daughter.

I learned Learners Lane began in Michelle Vallene’s and Suzie Connor’s living rooms in October, 2000. Searching for a way to help her children learn to read, she developed an unparalleled reading curriculum that she started teaching out of her home to groups of young children.
