Back to School Bash | Finding Our Ohana Review

Take a delightful and magical journey as Lani amd Maleko search for and find their ‘Ohana (family). While you travel along with them, discover some of Hawai’i's favorite local foods, too.

My Review:

I love children’s books that expose my little ones to different cultures. Finding Our ‘Ohana by Jerilyn Ito is a delightful story about two Hawaiian children who share a love and respect for family and food as they go on a magical adventure. The vivid, charming illustrations by Brooke Wilmeth captured my children’s imaginations as ordinary objects are magically transformed into the main characters’ favorite foods. You can almost smell the saimin (oriental noodle soup dish), liliko’I (passion fruit) and spam musubi (rice topped with spam and wrapped with roasted seaweed). As a home educating mom, I also appreciate the extra section for teacher’s ideas in the back of the book that offers fun learning activities and ideas for continuing the story. Overall, I really enjoy that this book celebrates the connection between good food and family! It was not only a hit with my children but I enjoyed reading it to them too

There is a section in the back for educational purposes; including teacher ideas, journal writing suggestions, comprehension and site mapping activities that can be done after reading the story. Since I am homeschooling this year for the first time, that would really, really come in handy!!

I found this interesting why can’t we all be this way?

Finding Our ‘Ohana is not just a story about Lani and Maleko finding a home and enjoying local food.  This story creates discussion as to what or who makes a family.  In Hawaii, we have many extensions to what is considered the typical family.  One example is having a hanai family who takes us in during times of need, or who are there for us in addition to our own typical family.
