Title: Down from Cascom Mountain: A Novel
Author: Ann Joslin Williams
About the Book:
Newlywed Mary Hall brings her husband to settle in the rural New Hampshire of her youth to fix up the house she grew up in and to reconnect to the land that defined her, with all its beauty and danger. But on a mountain day hike, she watches helplessly as her husband falls to his death. As she struggles with her sudden grief, in the days and months that follow, Mary finds new friendships-with Callie and Tobin, teenagers on the mountain club’s crew, and with Ben, the gentle fire watchman. All are haunted by their own losses, but they find ways to restore hope in one another, holding firmly as they navigate the rugged terrain of the unknown and unknowable, and loves lost and found.
My Review:
My family and I recently vacationed in the mountains and this was the perfect summer read to bring with me to our cabin retreat. I began reading it sitting and drinking a cup of morning coffee on the front porch nestled in the mountains and overlooking a cliff above the beautiful river. I finished reading it curled up by the fire because it was almost impossible to put down this engaging novel. Down From Cascom Mountain: A Novel gripped me with the emotional story and I appreciated the author’s ability to create characters that were thoroughly believable in their expressions of grief, loss, anger, hope and love. When my own family went hiking in the mountains that afternoon, I couldn’t stop thinking about the main character, Mary and her friends and was eager to keep reading this book. It was a fantastic summer read that was appealing in many ways from the lush descriptions of the beautiful mountain setting to the character development. I highly recommend this debut novel from author, Ann Joslin Williams.
