If You Are Self-Hosted, You Need To Sign Up for Pingdom (it’s free!)

My site has been self-hosted for over a year now and I’m always very aware of the downtime. I’d rather not have any, but that’s not very realistic since technology isn’t perfect 100% of the time. When my site is down, I like that I can call my host and find out what’s causing the issue. There’s times I’m sure when I don’t even know my site is down and sometimes it’s only until one of my readers emails me or posts on Facebook do I figure it out.

I recently came across a website, Pingdom, that monitors your site and will email you when it goes down! As the site owner, YOU will be the first to know when something is wrong and can handle it right away. Best of all, it’s FREE for the basic plan!! Gotta love free right?

With the free account you can monitor 1 website (or server) and receive 20 free SMS alerts. Email alerts are free. For me with the one site, this is perfect. If you have more than 1 site you might want to consider the next level of packages.

In my control panel, I can access a variety of reports about my site including an Uptime Report, Response Time Report, Detailed logs and this is a great way to see how reliable your hosting really is. I would have loved to seen my reports while I was still with Fat Cow Web Hosting. It was going down every day- seriously!
