Title: Queen Hereafter: A Novel of Margaret of Scotland

Author: Susan Fraser King

My Review:

Queen Hereafter is the historical novel based upon Margaret of Scotland, a pious girl who became Queen of Scotland. This book is powerfully written by Susan Fraser King and examines the real Margaret who is a woman of great character with strengths and flaws. From the beginning of this novel, I was transported to the world of Saxons and Scots and the authenticity is so appealing. Margaret, Scotland’s only royal Saint ruled until the 11th century after coming to Scotland as a Saxon Princess seeking refuge by a forced marriage to King Malcolm Canmore of Scotland.

Susan Fraser King delved deeply by researching the historical documents recounting the life of Queen Margaret and brilliantly used this to create a novel of friendship, love and realism. The characters are richly developed and the story in compelling.

Since I review a lot of books, I often find myself reading several at one time. Once I started reading the Queen Hereafter I found myself being pulled to read it exclusively. The author has thoroughly succeeded in writing a work of fiction that brings to life a medieval queen and the country that grew to love her. If you are a fan of historical novels then you will want to put Queen Hereafter at the top of your reading list.
