Title: The Wholesome Junk Food Cookbook: More Than 100 Healthy Recipes for Everyday Snacking

Author: Dr. Laura Trice

My Review:

I have a serious sweet tooth and love my desserts maybe a little too much.  I am always craving sugar and I am really not supposed to eat very much of it with the diet I am on. I know when I am making my own pies and cakes at home, I always balk at just how much sugar goes into everything. 1 cup of it here and 2 cups of it there- there’s sugar flying about everywhere! I try to ignore it, but it still bothers me that so much of it goes into everything.

Things are different now though because I have discover The Wholesome Junk Food Cookbook by Dr. Laura Trice. Awhile back I reviewed some cookies (which were DELICIOUS) from Laura’s Wholesome Junk Food. Now, Dr. Laura has shared with us more than 100 of her healthy recipes for cookies, cakes, pies, juices, smoothies and a bunch more good stuff we love to eat. If you are a dessert lover, then you need to get this cookbook! It’s a fabulous resource!

This cookbook differs from others on the market because all the recipes only use all-natural ingredients that can be found in your local grocery store. I looked through the entire cookbook and didn’t see any recipes that had processed white sugar! A dessert without sugar- how is that even possible? Well, let me tell you it is!

I also like how Dr. Laura shares information at the beginning of the book the different ingredients and which ones you should buy for the recipes. She uses plain English to explain the different types of fats, proteins, carbohydrates, etc to give the reader a basic understanding of how our body uses the food we eat.

The best part is all the scrumptious sounding recipes. Here’s a few that I have bookmarked that I want to try:

  • Lemon Squares
  • Rice Pie
  • Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie
  • Maple Sugar
  • Apple Cream Cheese Torte

Hungry yet? I tried The Pecan Pie and it was FABULOUS! I have an obssession with Pecan Butter Tarts and Pecan Pie. I would eat it everyday if I could. I normally buy them from the store so this was my first time making one.  The ingredient list was short which I liked and I didn’t have to go searching the stores for ingredients. The ingredients are maple syrup, salt, eggs, canned pumpkin, butter, pecan halves, and a 9 inch pie crust. Maple syrup costs a little bit more than regular syrup but you can’t even compare the flavours of the two.  And its pure and natural right from the maple trees which are plentiful in Canada.

Everything was going great as I was making it. I only made one mistake. I was supposed to melt the butter before mixing it in and I didn’t. I was stirring and stirring to try and break it up. I finally gave in and started the electric beater. It helped to break up the clumps and then I got tired and figured the butter would all melt in the oven anyways! That was my own dumb fault for getting too excited and not reading my directions as carefully as I should. I am an impatient chef!

The pie baked for about 50 minutes in the oven and the kitchen was smelling really good. I cooked it perfectly and the butter all melted so there was no sign of my cooking mistake. It tasted absolutely perfect!! I was curious to see it would taste like pumpkins but it didn’t. It was moist and sweet and DELICIOUS! This is one that I will be making again.

I can’t wait to try more of the recipes and share them with my family and friends!
